Crawl Space Cleaning and Debris Removal
[ 01 ] The Honest Answer
What you should know about crawl space cleaning and debris removal
Professional Crawl Space Cleaning in Middle Tennessee
Most crawl spaces that have not been maintained accumulate decades of debris: fallen and deteriorated insulation, construction waste from the original build or past repairs, organic material that has blown or decomposed onto the soil surface, rodent nesting and waste, and in some cases, hazardous materials including asbestos-containing insulation from older homes. All of this material creates a baseline of contamination that compromises any moisture control work installed on top of it and contributes to the poor air quality that rises into the living space above.
Crawl space cleaning is typically the first step before any moisture control, encapsulation, or structural repair project. A clean crawl space allows proper assessment of the soil surface, vapor barrier installation without obstructions, and a baseline environment that encapsulation systems can maintain effectively.
What We Remove During Crawl Space Cleaning
- Failed, fallen, or pest-contaminated insulation batts
- Construction debris, wood scraps, drywall pieces, concrete rubble from original construction or past work
- Rodent nesting material, droppings, and carcasses
- Old or failed vapor barriers that have deteriorated, torn, or become contaminated
- Organic debris including leaves, twigs, and decomposing material that has accumulated on the soil surface
- Standing water and debris in low areas of the crawl space floor
Hazardous Material Considerations
Homes built before 1980 may have insulation containing asbestos. Ground Up does not remove materials that test positive for asbestos, those materials must be handled by a certified asbestos abatement contractor. We will identify any suspect materials during our inspection and recommend appropriate testing before work begins if asbestos is a possibility.

[ 02 ] How It Works
What to expect, start to finish
Pre-Cleaning Inspection
We assess all material in the crawl space, identify suspect hazardous materials, document the scope of debris removal needed, and confirm access and disposal logistics.
Debris and Insulation Removal
All debris, fallen insulation, old vapor barrier, organic material, and pest waste is bagged or removed from the crawl space using appropriate containment and PPE.
Soil Surface Preparation
The crawl space soil surface is prepared for vapor barrier installation by leveling rough areas, removing sharp protrusions, and ensuring the floor is clean and ready for liner installation.
Ready for Moisture Control or Repair Work
With the crawl space clean, moisture control, structural repair, or encapsulation work proceeds without obstruction or contamination of new materials.
Starting any crawl space project without cleaning first is like painting over rust. You bury the problem instead of fixing it. We always clean first so we can see exactly what we are working with.
